Girls Basketball Update by Brianne Benton

The Owen J. Roberts girls’ basketball team’s season came to a close Friday night, after being suddenly eliminated from the district playoffs. They were defeated by the number one ranked team in the district, Cheltenham, who are also ranked at fifth overall in the state. The Wildcats had a rough first half and could not seem to pull back in the second. The Cheltenham Panthers held onto the lead the entire game, and ended up winning by 35 points. The loss ended the Wildcat’s season with a 10-13 record overall.

The Wildcats may have lost in the first round of districts, but during their season, they accomplished much more than anyone believed they could. When the season began, it seemed as if the entire school and community was skeptical when the Wildcats coach, Jeremy Mellon, and the players voiced how they had improved greatly and were going to be real contenders in the league. The Wildcats proved their point when they doubled the amount of games they had won in the last two years combined, won their tournament bracket down in Wildwood, and ended up being seeded as the thirty-second best team in the district.
