Track Update by Brianne Benton
The snow melted off the track just in time for the beginning of the spring sports season. March 8th marked the official start of spring sports, including track and field. The Owen J. Roberts boys’ team returns this year hoping to defend their title by becoming Pac-10 champions two years running. Last season, the boys went undefeated in the regular season before winning the championship and sending multiple runners on to represent Owen J. at districts. The boys graduated many of their top athletes, but there seems to be many willing to work hard and fill their places. The team is as large and as motivated as it has been in past years, and everyone is excited to see what they are able to do this year.
The girls’ team ran only an average season last year, and has hopes of improving their record this year as well as fighting towards a Pac-10 title of their own. The girls only lost a handful of seniors, but that still leaves a few key spots that need to be filled in. The girls’ team is also seeing a fewer number of runners come out for the team, which makes it harder on the girls, as they may be spread thin by entering multiple events. Even with fewer numbers, they seem excited and ready to hurtle the challenges in front of them. With head coach Eric Wentzel, and a string of both new and old coaches leading the way, both the girls and guys team are looking to have a strong season and be a competitive force in the Pac-10.
